Eric Dier’s confidence is soaring. But the hearts of England fans are still firmly closed.
“Dyer has told Gary Neville he should be part of the England squad,” the UK’s Daily Mail reported on Sept. 9 (ET). Dyer recently sat down with Neville and opened up about his playing career, his time at Tottenham, and more. In the process, Dyer also mentioned the England national team.
“I want to be part of the England squad and I believe I should be part of it, I believe I’m a player of that caliber,” Dyer said. I haven’t spoken to Gareth Southgate, but I try to do the best I can for the team and it’s not up to me to decide whether I’m in the squad,” he said, insisting that he is the player who should be in the England squad.
Dyer hasn’t played for England since the last World Cup in Qatar. In fact, he has been on the sidelines for around 15 months. Southgate had previously stuck with the Harry Maguire and Dyer combination, but ultimately dropped Dyer after he struggled too much. Since dropping Dyer, Southgate has been actively using Mark Geoghegan as a partner to Harry Maguire, with John Stones, Lewis Dunk, and Fikayo Tomori also filling in for Dyer in Euro qualifying.
Despite Dier’s increasing playing time at Bayern, Southgate hasn’t called him back into the squad, with many England fans questioning his style of play or quality, and he doesn’t plan to break up an already well-established defense.
Dyer exuded confidence and made a further case for why he should be selected. He said: “I can’t say my form has dropped since the World Cup. I’ve played my best football at Tottenham since Antonio Conte arrived, and I’ve continued to do so since coming to Bayern. People see me as a 37-year-old, but I’m still 30, my best years are not over,” he said, emphasizing that he has never been sluggish.
However, Dybala’s argument is not easy to convince. While there were moments of brilliance when Conte first arrived, Dyche’s form was desperate shortly before Conte left Spurs. Even before leaving Spurs on loan this season, it’s hard to imagine that Dier was in good form, and in fact, he was a non-factor.
