Star-studded series, much-anticipated sequels set for 2024

Exciting small screen content is set to hit screens in 2024 with the return of A-list actors and highly anticipated sequels of hit series, including Netflix’s “Squid Game.”Actors Kim Nam-joo has picked up a new role with MBC’s upcoming series “Wonderful World,” while Kong Hyo-jin will appear the production studio Keyeast Entertainment’s new series “Ask the Stars.”Kim’s first series in six years, “Wonderful World,” revolves around a psychology professor and writer, Eun Su-hyun (Kim), who lost her son. When the law fails to punish those who are responsible for her son’s death, she takes matters into her own hands, while crossing paths with a mysterious young man, Kwon Seon-yul (Cha Eun-woo).The mystery series, set to premiere in March, is led by director Lee Seung-young, whose previous work includes the thriller crime series “Voice 2” (2018), and is scripted by Kim Ji-eun, who wrote the mystery series “Lie After Lie” (2020).Kong returns to the small screen after five years with the high-profile series, “Ask the Stars,” where she stars alongside Lee Min-ho.The rom-com series follows a romance between Korean-American Astronaut Eve Kim (Kong) and OB/GYN doctor Gong Ryong (Lee). Kim takes on the first mission as the International Space Station commander, going on a year-long stay at the space station. Her mission meets an unexpected twist when Gong comes aboard the space station as a tourist.The series is led by the popular director Park Shin-woo, who directed the romance series “It’s Okay to Not Be Okay” (2020) and “Encounter” (2018), and is written by Seo Sook-hyang, who scripted the rom-com series “Don’t Dare to Dream” (2016). The channel and exact release date are yet to be announced for the series. TvN is rolling out another star-studded series “Queen of Tears,” starring Kim Soo-hyun, Kim Ji-won and Park Sung-hoon.

The romance series is about Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun), a legal counsel of the conglomerate Queens Group, who married the group’s heiress and its managing director Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won). When Baek decides to divorce his egotistical and demanding wife, he meets a side of Hong that he’s never known and finds hope of rekindling their marriage.The series, scheduled for release in the first half of 2024, is co-led by director Kim Hee-won, whose previous work includes the hit series “Vincenzo” (2021), and director Jang Young-woo. It is scripted by the star writer Park Ji-eun, who wrote the hit series “My Love from the Star”(2013) and “Crash Landing on You” (2019).Two much-awaited sequels — Netflix’s “Squid Game” and SBS’ “The Fiery Priest” — are set to arrive in 2024 as well.Korea’s biggest Netflix hit, “Squid Game,” is finally coming back with a second season, three years after it became a global sensation. The streaming platform unveiled the cast members of the new season in June, announcing that the production team began shooting the following month.The thriller series is about hundreds of cash-strapped contestants who compete in a string of deadly but high-stakes children’s games for a tempting prize. The new cast members include Yim Si-wan, Kang Ha-neul, Lee Jin-wook, Park Sung-hoon, Yang Dong-guen and Park Gyu-young.SBS announced that the second season of its hit series, “The Fiery Priest,” is part of its 2024 lineup. The comedy action series follows a hot-tempered priest Kim Hae-il (Kim Nam-gil) who teams up with detective Koo Dae-young (Kim Sung-kyun) and prosecutor Park Kyung-sun (Lee Ha-nee) to solve the murder of a priest and take down the vicious 메이저 cartel behind it.Both series are expected to come out in the latter half of the year.
