Hanwha’s Golden Glove second baseman is back

Hanwha infielder Jung Eun-won (23) delivered a thrilling game-winning hit.

Jung Eun-won hit an infield single in front of the pitcher with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning of a 5-5 tie in the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO League home game against SSG at Daejeon Hanwha Life Eagles Park on Saturday to give Hanwha a 6-5 victory. Avenging a loss the day before, Hanwha improved to 45 wins, six ties and 62 losses on the season, overtaking Kiwoom (51 wins, three ties and 72 losses) to escape last place.

It was a dramatic come-from-behind victory. Trailing 4-5 in the bottom of the ninth, Hanwha tied the game at 5-5 on Park Sang-un’s single to left-center with runners on first and second after back-to-back singles by Choi In-ho and Jang Jin-hyuk. Hanwha had the bases loaded with one out in its next at-bat, but was unable to capitalize.

After the match, Jung said, “I’m happy, I’m very happy. It was a long game, but it feels good to get the win.” “My overall batting performance was good today, so I went into the batter’s box with confidence. I tried to hit line drives rather than ground balls, and it led to good results,” he smiled. He continued, “After going to the Futures (second team), I was mentally stabilized and my technique was solidified. I also heard a lot of good things, which made me feel more relaxed. The season is coming to an end and I want to finish with a good feeling. Rather than putting it down as bad, I will try my best to make up for it and finish it off.” Hanwha head coach Choi Won-ho also applauded Jung’s performance. “She had four hits, including the final out, and helped us win the game,” Choi said.
