Macau welcomed more than 362,600 visitors during the three-day Christmas period from Dec. 23-25, according to official data. The average daily visitor arrivals were close to 121,000 over the holiday period, according to preliminary figures from Macau’s public security police.
The daily average for the Christmas season held up well compared to Macau’s previous peak tourist season for eight days, which included China’s National Day in the fall. Official data showed daily visitor arrivals averaged 116,546 in the previous festive season.
The daily high for the Christmas season was 133,603 on Saturday. On Sunday, Christmas Eve (Dec. 24), Macau recorded 120,594 arrivals, followed by 108,446 on Christmas Day, according to figures released by authorities.
Christmas is not a holiday in mainland China, Macau’s main tourist supply market, but it is an official break in Hong Kong, the second most important tourist source for Macau. Today (Dec. 26) is still a holiday in Hong Kong.
Police did not provide statistics on each of the visitors’ departure points over the Christmas period. However, most tourists entered Macau via the border gate checkpoint between Macau and mainland China, or the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Representatives from the gaming and travel sector previously told GGRAsia they expect large numbers of visitors to the city over the holiday season despite the relatively cold weather in southern China ahead of the Christmas season.
