Shin Yubin wins WTT Contender mixed doubles final; women’s doubles reach quarterfinals.

Shin Yubin (No. 9-Korean Air) reached the mixed doubles final at the World Table Tennis (WTT) Contender Rio de Janeiro 2023.

Partnered with Lim Jong-hoon (Korea Exchange), Shin defeated the 10th-ranked pair of Jang Woo-jin and Jeon Jeon-hee (Mirae Asset Securities) 3-0 (11-5, 11-4, 11-4) in the mixed doubles semifinals on the fifth day of competition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The fourth-ranked pair of Shin Yoo-bin and Lim Jong-hoon will play for gold against Spain’s Maria Xiao and Alvaro Robles (eighth) on Wednesday.

Shin and Lim reached the final without dropping a single set to their opponents, including their Round of 16 opponents Polina Vega-Nicolas Burgos of Chile (unranked) and their quarterfinal opponents Ovidiu Bernadette Sötz of Romania (No. 9).

Shin reached the quarterfinals of the women’s doubles, partnering with Jeon Jeon-hee.

After defeating Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi and Julia Takahashi (unranked) 3-2 (8-11, 11-2, 11-8, 5-11, 11-5) in the round of 16, the No. 1 pair defeated Chinese Taipei’s Lee Hua and Tsui Wu (No. 24) 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-6) in the quarterfinals.

Shin Yubin and Jeon Jeon-hee will play the unranked team of Bernadette Sötz-Elizabetha Samara of Romania in the final.

Choi Hyo-joo (Korea Horse Racing Association)-Kim Na-young (POSCO International), ranked 40th, also advanced to the women’s doubles quarterfinals, where they will face Sweden’s Kristina Karlberg-Linda Verström, ranked 6th.

In women’s singles, 71st-ranked Lee Eun-hye (Korean Air) defeated 49th-ranked Lee Sion (Samsung Life) 3-1 (11-2, 4-11, 11-4, 12-10) in the round of 16 and will face 41st-ranked Bruna Takahashi of Brazil in the quarterfinals.

Kim Na-young (76th), who defeated Puerto Rico’s Adriana Diaz (12th) 3-1 (11-8, 7-11, 11-5, 11-9), will play Sweden’s Linda Verström (47th) in the quarterfinals.

Ision, who lost to Lee Eun-hye, and Jeon Jeon-hee, who came from behind to lose 2-3 (11-4, 15-13, 8-11, 6-11, 9-11) to France’s Pritika Pavad (No. 44), were eliminated in the round of 16.

In the men’s doubles, only three Korean pairs in the quarterfinals booked at least two medals.

Lim Jong-hoon-Ahn Jae-hyun (Korea Exchange), ranked 22nd, met Argentina’s Gaston Alto-Oracio Cifuentes (8th) on their way to the final.

The unranked pair of Cho Seung-min (Samsung Life) and Oh Jun-sung (Mirae Asset Securities) will face Lee Sang-soo (Samsung Life) and Cho Dae-sung (Samsung Life) in the quarterfinals.

In the men’s singles round of 16, Cho Seung-min (38th) and Jang Woo-jin (8th) advanced to the quarterfinals with 3-2 (12-10, 4-11, 14-12, 3-11, 11-4) victories over Simone Gaultier (32nd) of France and 3-1 (11-3, 10-12, 11-8, 11-6) over Jules Rolland (111th), respectively.

Cho Seung-min will play Germany’s Patrick Franciska (25th), while Zhang Wu-jin will face Chinese Taipei’s Zhuang Zhiyuan (26th) for a spot in the final.

Lee Sang-soo (27th) was upset 1-3 (11-9, 8-11, 11-13, 9-11) by Japan’s Sora Matsushima 먹튀검증토토사이트 (134th) in the round of 16.
