Korean women’s badminton standout Ahn Se-young (Samsung Life Insurance) has reached the quarterfinals of the Korea Open as she seeks her sixth win of the season.
The world No. 2 defeated Indonesia’s Putrikusuma Wardani, ranked No. 35, 2-0 (21-7 21-12) in the round of 16 of the Korea Open Women’s Singles at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour Super 500 event at Jinnam Gymnasium in Yeosu, South Jeolla Province on Tuesday.
Ahn, who won back-to-back titles at the India Open and Indonesia Masters in January before dominating the most prestigious event of the year, the Jeon Young Open, in March, has also recently finished on top at the Thailand Open and Singapore Open, giving her five gold medals this season.
Coming into the event as the defending champion, Ahn has raised expectations as she cruises to her sixth title of the season and second straight at the event.
Ahn will now face teammate Shim Yoo-jin (33rd – Incheon International Airport) for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Ahn was not the only Korean player to make it to the quarterfinals.
In the women’s singles, Kim Ga-eun (#19-Samsung Life) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-0 (21-9 21-17) win over He Bingjiao (#5-China) in the round of 16. Kim will face Akane Yamaguchi (No. 1-Japan) in the quarterfinals.
The women’s doubles team of Lee So-hee (Incheon International Airport) and Baek Hana (MG Saemaul Bank) also defeated India’s Trisha Jolly and Gayatri Puella 2-0 (21-11 21-4) in the round of 16.
Kim So-young (Incheon International Airport) and Gong Hee-yong (Jeonbuk Bank) defeated Shin Seung-chan (Incheon International Airport) and Lee Yoo-rim (Samsung Life Insurance) 2-0 (21-13 21-10) to reach the quarterfinals.
Seo Seung-jae (Samsung Life) and Chae Yoo-jung (Incheon International Airport) in mixed doubles and Kang Min-hyuk (Samsung Life), 한국야동 Kim Young-hyuk (Suwon City Hall) and Wang Chan (Gimcheon City Hall) in men’s doubles also advanced to the quarterfinals.
