The greatest soap operas don’t get much bigger than this. Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been stabbed in the back by his interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, whom he trusted like family.
According to a report by the LA Times, a leading U.S. media outlet, Ohtani’s name came up during an investigation into an illegal gambler named Matthew Boyer in Orange County.
In response, Otani’s defense lawyers began to investigate the truth, and it was revealed that Ippei had stolen Otani’s money and used it for illegal gambling. According to the LA Times, Mizuhara allegedly stole millions of dollars.
“Recently, while responding to media inquiries, we discovered that Mr. Ohtani was the victim of a large-scale theft and filed a complaint with law enforcement authorities,” West Hollywood law firm Burke Brettler said in a statement. In response, the Dodgers fired Mizuhara.
“Ohtani has denied having any contact with Boyer,” the organization said. As a result, Ohtani was forced to find a new interpreter to replace Mizuhara, who had been with him since his days with the Los Angeles Angels.

After a disappointing grounder to shortstop in the first inning, Ohtani hit a single to right off San Diego starter Darvish Yu in the third inning and then stole second base. After grounding out to third base in the fifth, Ohtani lined a single to left field with runners on first and second in the eighth inning to make it 4-2, driving in pinch-hitter Gavin Lux.
Then, with runners on first and second, Freddie Freeman hit a big fly ball to the outfield, but it was caught by right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. After stepping on second base on the hit, Ohtani panicked when he saw the ball being caught and instead of stepping back to second, he went back to first base, where he was called out on a throw from Nu.
“It was completely my mistake,” Ohtani said after the game. I’ll reflect on it and play tomorrow,” he said after the game.
