‘Drone spying’ punished, Canadian women’s soccer advances to quarterfinals with third straight win

The Canadian women’s soccer team has reached the quarterfinals with three consecutive group wins after being punished by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) with a six-point deduction for spying on an opponent’s training ground with a drone.

Canada defeated Colombia 1-0 in their final Group A soccer match at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Monday (Aug. 1) at the Stade de Nice in Nice, France.

With the win, the defending champions finished the group stage on a three-game winning streak, but due to a six-point deduction, Canada finished with three points (+3 goals for), level on points with Colombia (3 points – 0 goals against), but advanced to the quarterfinals as second in the group on goal difference.

Colombia punched their ticket to the quarterfinals as one of the top two teams in each group, along with Brazil.

In Group A, ‘hosts’ France (6 points) won their final match against New Zealand (0 points) 2-1 to top the group and advance to the quarterfinals.

France lost to Colombia in the first round, but secured top spot in the group thanks to Canada’s point deduction.

After a scoreless first half against Columbia, Canada broke through in the second half when Vanessa Jill scored a header from a free kick in the 16th minute that proved to be the game-winner.

Canada will face Germany in the quarterfinals for a spot in the semifinals.

In Group C, Japan advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-1 win over Nigeria in their final group game, finishing second in the group behind Spain (9 points), who secured first place with two wins and one loss (6 points).

Notably, Japan advanced to the quarterfinals in both men’s and women’s soccer.

In Group C, Brazil lost 0-2 to Spain in their final match to finish third in the group with one win and two losses (3 points), but earned a spot in the quarterfinals as the second-best of the group’s three teams.

In Group B, the United States beat Australia 2-1 to top the group with three straight wins (9 points), while Germany (6 points) also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 win over Zambia (0 points) to finish second in the group.
