Manager Southgate
Gareth Southgate, the manager of the England national soccer team that finished runner-up for two consecutive times in the Euro (European Football Championship), has finally stepped down from his post.
According to major foreign news outlets such as Reuters on the 16th, Manager Southgate announced his resignation in a statement that day, saying, “It is time for a change and to open a new chapter. The final against Spain in Berlin on Sunday (the 14th) will be my last game as England manager.”
It comes just two days after their defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final.
The Football Association (FA) also reported on social media that “CEO Mark Bullingham thanked Manager Southgate for his decision to resign.”
Manager Southgate, who led England since 2016 and led 102 games, has thus stepped down from his position after 8 years.
The contract was until December, and the FA reportedly wanted Southgate to lead the team until the 2026 World Cup in North and Central America.
England have been suffering from a ‘title thirst’ since winning the 1966 World Cup on home soil, without winning a major trophy.
Under Southgate, England achieved excellent results, including fourth place at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and second place at Euro 2020, and until then, the support of the fans was solid.
Although the team achieved the same results in Euro 2024 as in the previous tournament, negative evaluations of manager Southgate grew due to the team’s consistently disappointing performance.
In a statement, Southgate said: “As a proud Englishman, playing for and managing England has been the honour of my life. I have given my all.”
Eddie Howe (England), Newcastle manager, and Thomas Tuchel (Germany), former Bayern Munich manager, are being mentioned as strong candidates to succeed Manager Southgate. 안전놀이터
