China retakes lead with Singapore visitor arrivals in February

In February, China overtook Indonesia as the top source of Singapore visitor arrivals, one of the top inputs in the Chinese market since July and August last year.

Singapore recorded about 1.44 million visitors in February, 22.7% or 326,970 from mainland China, according to the latest data released by the Singapore Tourism Authority (STB).

The February figures are in line with mutual agreements for 30-day visa-free travel between China and Singapore, effective from Feb. 10 to Feb. 17 and Feb. 9, during the Lunar New Year holiday in mainland China.

Indonesia, which recently mostly leads the market, was the country’s second-largest tourist supplier, supplying 190,760 visitors in February. The third-largest country was Malaysia, which supplied 100,200 people.

Of all the source markets, mainland China recorded its biggest year-over-year growth of 825.9% in February.

Among the top three source markets, visitors from mainland China stayed in Singapore the longest, averaging 4.22 days. The average stay in all international markets was 3.46 days in February, down 8.7 percent from a year earlier.

The latest monthly tally brings Singapore’s total visitors to 2.87 million in the first two months of the year, up 52% year-on-year. Of those 2.87 million visitors, 538,160 or about 18.7% are from mainland China, making it the single biggest source of Singapore arrivals during the period.

Singapore is home to Resorts World Sentosa, which is run by the division of Genting Singapore Ltd., and Marina Bay Sands, which is run by the division of Las Vegas Sands Corp.

International visitor arrivals in city-states could reach about “15 to 16 million” in 2024, bringing tourism revenue to about “S$26 million ($19.4 billion),” STB said in its early February forecast.
